Brad Anderson of Des Moines has been named the new AARP Iowa State Director. He will oversee operations of the Iowa state office, which includes a staff of four full-time employees and a 14-person volunteer advisory Executive Council that works on behalf of all Iowans 50+, including the more than 370,000 AARP members statewide. He succeeds Kent Sovern, who is retiring after seven years as State Director.
AARP celebrates those who embody our #DisruptAging movement that challenges ageist stereotypes and highlights all those who own their age. Among those New Yorkers who are doing just that is Nancy Genova, President of the board for the 100 Hispanic Women organization. Nancy has over twenty-four years of health care experience and is currently full-time faculty at Hostos Community College in the Behavioral & Social Sciences Department’s Public Policy & Law Unit. She is a vibrant, active member of the community and as part of her role as board President, she is on the planning committee of their yearly Mind, Body, Spirit conference, which our Associate State Director, Maggie Castro, will be speaking at on May 30th in New Rochelle, NY. AARP Iowa and Attorney General Tom Miller hosted a statewide teletown hall, “Don’t Be Fooled by Imposter Scams,” on Monday, May 14. This program highlighted the growing problem of impostor scams, ways you can identify and avoid being scammed by them, addressed caller questions and concerns, and providing helpful resources, tips and websites.
Thanks to the California Voter’s Choice Act, a law passed in 2016, voters in five California counties will have more flexibility to choose how, when, and where they cast their ballots, beginning with the June 5 th primary election.
