Here’s a way to exercise, socialize and realize the benefits of public transportation in the greater St. Louis area.
AARP has partnered with Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT) to sponsor the Ten Toe Express walking program. In its ninth year, the program helps older people learn about the MetroLink system by combining ridership with an activity such as shopping, exploring or grabbing a meal.
The AARP Breakfast Bunch was formed especially for the 12-week spring portion of “Ten Toe” to cater to AARP members. It runs April 4 through June 27. Members will meet each Saturday morning at 8:45 at the Shrewsbury MetroLink station and then ride to a designated location. Registration is required and participants pay for their breakfasts. To participate in the Breakfast Bunch walks, registration in the Ten Toe Express program is required.
So, what do toes have to do with riding a train? The key to the program is the exercise participants get by walking to their activities once they depart the train.
“Offering programs that link healthy living with accessing the community through transit are great ways to introduce our members to the real possibilities in options available to the region,” said Sheila Holm, AARP Missouri associate state director.
