AARP Texas Applauds Release of Texas Broadband Plan

AUSTIN, Texas AARP Texas Acting State Director Ryan Gruenenfelder issued the following statement in response to today’s (June 15, 2022) issuance by Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar of a Texas Broadband Plan:

“Because access to high-speed internet is vitally important to all Texans, especially the state’s 50+ population, today’s unveiling of a Texas Broadband Plan is a significant and laudable achievement.

“This new road map for expanding broadband access builds upon testimony from many Texans, including expert advice. It is our hope at AARP Texas that the plan serves as a strong foundation for continued and much-needed success in digitally connecting the state.

“Today, millions of Texans do not have high-speed internet access at home. Older Texans especially need affordable and reliable broadband access for a host of reasons, such as communicating with medical providers via telehealth, safety reasons, education purposes, entertainment, and to stem social isolation.

“Access to high-speed and low-cost internet is foundational to unlocking the economic and societal power of the 50+. Being connected is more important than ever. We look forward to continuing to work with Comptroller Hegar and other leaders as this new plan is realized across the state.”
