Alice Sheth, Helping Women Plan
By Elizabeth Rubio
Alice Sheth of Austin is a woman who has dedicated her time to getting out the word about AARP’s Decide.Create.Share. initiative with the women of her community. Last May, she and her sister attended a Decide.Create.Share conference in Austin. By the end of the presentation, which focused on long-term care and the benefits of advanced planning for women, Alice was inspired to share with her them what she had learned.
“Alice committed fully to understanding the program and how she could share the information about making smart choices for our future with other women,” says AARP's Jessica Lemann, who has worked closely with Alice throughout the past year.
The most important aspect about serving as an AARP volunteer to Alice is her responsibility to the community to share the information and resources of the organization. Alice recalls encountering trouble when she was left to handle the affairs of her father, mother, and stepfather.
“My mother had prepared very well financially, but had made too many assumptions in other areas,” explains Alice, discussing how she wants to help prevent others from encountering the same troubles.
Alice enjoys seeing the expressions of gratitude from the women she presents to, helping them become empowered to remain in control of their futures. “These are women who want to remain useful, and not become a burden on their families,” she says.
When not volunteering, she spends time with her four grandsons, ranging from age 2 to 11, who conveniently live right behind her house. She also gardens, knits, reads, teaches and travels.
