Classes Offer a Double Dose of Good Health

Multi-ethnic group of seniors taking tai chi class

Double down on good health this summer with two free classes hosted by AARP Houston.

The “Get Moving, Eat Healthy” classes—one focused on fitness and the other on nutritious cooking—will each be 45 minutes to an hour long.

The exercise classes will help participants learn safe, effective Zumba moves. Sessions will be held Thursdays at 10 a.m. in person and virtually via Zoom starting in June. The in-person location is Houston’s Metropolitan Multi-Service Center at 1475 West Gray Street.

Zumba mixes low- and high-intensity dance moves to Latin and world music, helping to improve cardiovascular conditioning, balance and flexibility.

The cooking classes—held every third Tuesday of the month at noon via Facebook—will help people learn how to make healthy dishes. The next classes are set for July 18 and Aug. 15.

The obesity rate in Texas is about 36 percent, according to 2021 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Obesity is a risk factor for conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

The classes are open to people of all ages—AARP members and nonmembers. Get more information and register at aarp.org/houston.
