Creating More Walkable Neighborhoods in Texas

Walking

AARP Texas is working to help make communities safer for pedestrians of all ages with a new educational program.

The Texas State Walking College is a five-month distance-learning fellowship program for walkable/livable community advocates from across Texas. AARP is teaming up with the nonprofit America Walks on the program, which runs from May to September.

Participants will study leadership development, coalition- building, walkable-community design, local public policy and strategic planning. They will receive one-on-one coaching to help develop an action plan for their communities, which will include recruiting others, advocating with government officials and identifying possible design changes to public spaces.
