AARP Eye Center

To describe Jann Horswell of Dallas, a 67-year-old certified personal trainer, as active would be an understatement. But
“Baby boomers, we were an active generation in our younger days,” explains Jann. “But for whatever reason over the course of our careers, a lot of us have gotten out of that habit. So it’s just about getting back into that healthy routine,” she says discussing the origin of her new Dallas-based business venture Boomer Fitness.
Susan Williams, who leads AARP's work in the Dallas area, began working for AARP at the same time as Jann started volunteering, more than ten years ago.
“I always know that when I need help, Jann will be there,” says Susan. “She is one of the most connected people I know in Dallas. She knows absolutely everything that is going on!”
Lately, Jann's AARP work in Dallas has centered around a topic that relates to her new business: Life Reimagined. The recently launched AARP initiative focuses on helping Americans 50+ alter the way they think about the second half of their life.
“I just love it because people need to change the ‘life is done when I retire’ mentality. It is far from it,” says Jann.
“Many people, when they retire, want to start something that they’ve always dreamed of. We get to help them realize that.”
Jann also enjoys working to make Dallas a more livable city. As the lead volunteer in her area, she fights to improve Dallas, so that folks can be safer whether they are young or old, walking or commuting by car.
“It’s apolitical, and it doesn’t just benefit one group of people. It’s good for all ages,” Jann exclaims.
When she isn’t running around making her community a better place, Jann can be found playing a game that is quickly becoming her new passion, "pickleball," which is a variation of tennis and badminton using a wiffle ball and an oversized table tennis paddle.
After years of diligent service, she says one thing is certain about her future:
“I just don't see myself not being an AARP volunteer. We have too much fun.”
