This past summer, AARP Virgin Islands (AARP VI), in partnership with the Virgin Islands Department of Human Services, successfully convened the first two of three Elder Justice Summit sessions. These gatherings brought together legislators, financial professionals, advocates, legal professionals, first responders, law enforcement, and mandated reporters. The consensus was clear: existing protections are insufficient. Findings from the first two sessions have shaped AARP VI’s legislative priorities, and the organization has pledged to lead the charge in advancing changes that will safeguard the financial futures of our elders.  AARP VI has already briefed Senators Novelle E. Francis, Jr., Avery L. Lewis, Kurt A. Vialet, Kenneth L. Gittens, and Marvin A. Blyden of the 36th Legislature, and has engaged the Lieutenant Governor’s Office.

Food is love. Food is community. Food is culture and history. AARP VI wants to highlight Virgin Islands' cuisine and the people who cook from the heart. We want to proudly feature a YOUR favorite family recipe on our webpage and in our newsletter!
At an emergency meeting with its Board of Directors, VI Water and Power Authority (WAPA) Executive Director Hugo Hodge, introduced a plan to take advantage of the dropping cost of propane and other fuels. The plan requested permission to re-institute its former “Hedge Program” with a few modifications. Hodge justified the request saying that “Taking advantage in the drop of propane prices will give ratepayers significant cost savings.”
Español When AARP launched its Real Pads earlier this year its designers envisioned the tablet to be something that would appeal to seniors because they would find it easy to understand, easy to use and enjoyable. Ironically, seniors are not the only group who finds those technical characteristics to be very important when selecting a tablet.
Español AARP VI feels that no one should ever be the victim of a fraud or scam. But to make sure that the right people are aware of what is going on in our community, we need the assistance, eyes and ears of all AARP members.
Magdalene Morancie, Acting Director
Elected leaders are important resources in a community. These individuals hold a great deal of responsibility for the health, welfare and prosperity of their community. Their leadership and foresight are critical toward the success or failure of all of us. Voters, on the other hand have a responsibility and a duty to learn as much as they can about the individuals who have come forward to serve the community. Only by getting familiar with each candidate can the voters truly feel they will be making the best possible selection for their community leaders.
Two St. Croix residents: Kimberly Jones and Troy deChabert-Schuster, who were recently nominated by Governor John P. DeJongh to serve on the Governor Juan F. Luis (JFL) Hospital Board have sailed through a Rules and Judiciary Legislative confirmation hearing in early August.
VI residents are participating in training sessions aimed at readying them for the new challenges that will await them at the polls this year. Along with a long list of candidates to select from, voters will also face both new equipment and a new method for voting. Realizing how daunting this new challenge may be for older voters, AARP-VI has been conducting voting machine demonstrations in conjunction with the VI Board of Elections to help familiarize voters with the changes to the 2014 elections.
