AARP volunteers and staff worked hard to ensure the passage of the CARE (Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable) Act, which helps the over one million family caregivers in Virginia as they prepare to perform a variety of medical/nursing tasks, including medication management, injections, wound care, transfers, and more upon discharge of their loved ones from a hospital setting. Most Virginians who receive assistance at home rely exclusively on unpaid family caregivers for help – at a value to the commonwealth of about $11.7 billion annually.
At a time when our country is extremely polarized, family caregiving is a rare issue that unites us. It isn’t a Democratic issue or a Republican issue. It’s a family issue that affects us all. If you’re not a caregiver now, you will be one or will need one in the future.
A growing number of workers in Virginia face the demand and challenges that often are associated with providing care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other memory problems.
RICHMOND — AARP will sponsor the first Governor’s Conference on Aging in 13 years to identify ways to enhance the health and well-being of Virginians as they age. The Virginia Department for the Aging and Rehabilitative Services will convene the meeting in Richmond May 2-3.

Listening to music is a coping tool used by many caregivers challenged by caregiver stress.
