Just days after Seattle welcomed scores of sci-fi, fantasy and comic fans of all ages to the sold out Emerald City Comicon, AARP Washington is playing host to another group of heroes – those dedicated to transforming the lives of millions of older Americans. The White House Conference on Aging is holding the third of five regional events on April 2 on the shores of Elliot Bay at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center.
People work hard and deserve to retire with confidence.

AARP donated $35,000 to assist with efforts to rebuild following the American Canyon earthquake in August. California Executive Council member Larry Saxxon presented a contribution of $25,000 to Director Terence P. Mulligan with Napa Valley Community Foundation and $10,000 to Executive Director Elizabeth Hoffman with Rebuilding Together Solano County. The funds are being dedicated to long-term recovery assistance after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit Sonoma and Solano counties in Northern California on Sunday, August 24 – the largest earthquake to hit the area in 25 years.
Ron Yaden of Tacoma has been honored with the 2014 AARP Washington State Andrus Award for Community Service. Ron is extraordinarily dedicated to helping his community here in the Northwest and personifies the dedication of our AARP volunteers.
AARP has announced the appointment of Lacey resident Mike Tucker as the new volunteer AARP Washington State President. In his role, Tucker will direct the organization’s activities on behalf of more than 920,000 Washington State members, and provide leadership in long-range planning to help meet the needs of the state’s older adults and their families.
California ranks 9 th overall when it comes to meeting the long-term care needs of older residents, but AARP warns much more must be done, at an accelerated pace, to improve the state’s health care system around prevention & treatment, affordability & access in Adult Day Resource Center functions, nursing home costs/quality-of-life, quality-of-care in the LTSS system, and support for family caregivers.
