Your help has never been more important

It’s never been more important. Elementary school students in kindergarten through third grade are learning to read. After third grade, they are reading to learn.

In Ohio, students must pass the state reading proficiency test in order to advance from third to fourth grade. Eighty percent of students who have not learned to read by fourth grade end up dropping out of school before graduation. Seventy percent of America’s prison population reads at below fourth-grade level.

AARP Experience Corps needs volunteer tutors to work side-by-side with teachers, helping students who have fallen behind in reading.

You, personally, can make an enormous difference in the life of a child by volunteering with AARP Experience Corps, which engages adults age 50 and over in tutoring children in kindergarten through third grade in reading and literacy. Greater Cleveland Volunteers manages the AARP Experience Corps volunteer program in 15 elementary schools operated by Cleveland Metropolitan Schools.
