Almost a year ago AARP South Dakota hosted a two-day brainstorming session for ways to improve transportation in Sioux Falls.  City leaders and non-profit organizations came together to discuss short and long-term transportation challenges and concerns.  One of the ideas that came out of the meeting was to create an all in one directory of transportation services in Sioux Falls. As we enter mid-August and with Dakotafest, the South Dakota State Fair and Labor Day quickly approaching; we are officially entering election season. Sioux Falls Transit Task Force Report

Over the last year, AARP South Dakota State Director, Sarah Jennings, has served on the Sioux Falls Transit Task Force (the Task Force).  The Task Force was put together by city leaders to address transportation challenges in the growing city.  The goals of the Task Force are to reduce paratransit costs, increase fixed-route services, foster a community-based collaboration for funding a coordinated non-profit transportation effort, develop a transit travel training program and provide a long-term financial status report to the …

2014 Long Term Care Scorecard

In June, AARP released a state-by-state Long-Term Services and Supports Scorecard.  This is a follow-up to the initial scorecard AARP release in 2011.  South Dakota’s ranking was slightly higher than the previous scorecard and does a good job of details our state’s strengths and challenges.  Not surprisingly, South Dakota ranks very high in Quality of Life and Quality of Care.  Specifically, the percent of adults with disabilities in the community are satisfied or very satisfied with life.  South Dakota’s rate of employment …

On May 13, AARP South Dakota sponsored the spring Healthy South Dakota stakeholders meeting.  We are pleased to support an organization that focuses on healthy nutrition and physical activity for all South Dakotans. AARP SD working on transportation issues

AARP South Dakota is continuing to work on transportation issues for seniors in Sioux Falls and all of South Dakota. AARP South Dakota continues to serve on the Sioux Falls Transit Task Force.  As this year long work group nears the end of its work, there has been a lot of progress made on education programs regarding Fixed-Route Service in Sioux Falls, reducing the reliance on paratransit ridership and improving coordination among non-profits in Sioux Falls that offer transportation services. …
