AARP Colorado sent out a mailing to its members about potential, upcoming legislation that could threaten telephone land-line service and possibly impact 911 emergency services.

This year, AARP Foundation is again providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low to moderate income through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. Now in its 45thyear, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, is giving special attention to those 60 and older. Membership is not required and all ages may use this free service.

AARP is informing our Western Slope members, as well as all 50-plus residents, about some special events at the Fruita Community Center, 324 N. Coulson St. in Fruita.

Colorado has a rich history of Chicano activism during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and AARP Colorado, along with the History Colorado Museum and Regis University, are keeping that history alive through oral-history recordings, digital collections and stationary exhibits and an event to kick off a celebration of those significant contributions.

AARP Colorado was a proud sponsor of KUVO’s Eighth Annual signature event, Live at the Vineyards, last month at the Balistreri Vineyards, just north of downtown Denver.

John Meredith of Colorado Springs was recently named Colorado AARP Foundation Tax-Aide State Coordinator. He will oversee the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites and more than 300 volunteers, who prepare tax returns free of charge each year for low- to moderate-income families.

Now is a great time to be a woman. As mature women, we are becoming aware of our power and wisdom, which is based on our life experiences and knowledge. Like seeds in the garden, we are waking up and bursting forth with wisdom to create a new world.
