AARP, Governor Newsom, CA Department of Aging Introduce COVID-19 Resource Card
AARP has filed testimony with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in response to a four-year rate plan submitted by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). Starting with an 18% increase in 2023 for both electric and gas service, this is PG&E’s biggest rate increase in decades and follows a 9% rate increase imposed upon PG&E customers earlier this year. If approved, by 2026, customers would see their energy bills skyrocket: a 39.25% increase over 2021 for electric rates, and a 56.9% increase for gas rates.
On behalf of AARP’s 3.3 million California members, I thank Governor Newsom for signing into law SB 95, which establishes emergency paid sick leave for California workers during the COVID-19 pandemic – retroactive to January 1, 2021 and through September, 2021. California is now only the fourth state to have extended paid sick leave during the pandemic. I also wish to thank Senator Skinner, Assemblymember Ting, Assemblymember Gonzalez, Assemblymember Carillo, and all who voted in favor of SB 95.
In recent weeks, AARP has grown increasingly concerned at the rapid increase in the number of cases and deaths from COVID-19 in our state’s nursing facilities. Like all Californians, we were deeply disturbed at the news that staff of the Magnolia Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Riverside failed to show up for their shifts, necessitating action by Riverside County to care for and move the residents.
SACRAMENTO – Today, AARP applauded California Governor Jerry Brown for signing into law the landmark Senate Bill 1234, California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Act (SB 1234), introduced by Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De León. In signing SB 1234, California has created an auto-enrolled, supplemental retirement savings program for nearly 7 million private sector workers in California who did not previously have access to a retirement savings plan through their job.
SACRAMENTO – Today, AARP applauded the vote on the Senate Floor passing the California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Act (Senate Bill 1234) introduced by Senate President Pro Tem Kevin De León into the Assembly. AARP strongly supports SB 1234, which, if passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Brown, would create an auto-enrolled, supplemental retirement savings program for more than 7 million private sector workers in California who do not have access to a retirement savings plan through their job.
AARP thanks Governor Newsom for signing the Age Friendly California Act [AB 1118] into law, making California the first state to move toward membership in AARP’s Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities through an act of the legislature.
