As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

On Thursday, June 7th, 2018, Abraham Lincoln High School graduate, Gissell Jiménez, was selected as the recipient of this year’s Andrus Opportunity Award along with $5,000 to help her pay for her education. The award is named after AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who served as principal of Lincoln High from 1916 to 1944.

The battle was one of many in an ongoing war between the two nations, but the victory temporarily stopped France’s invasion of the nation and bolstered Mexican spirits by showing that it could resist global powers.
