We Earned Social Security—Now Let’s Protect It
It’s that time of year again, Washingtonians—Medicare Open Enrollment is just around the corner! If you are over age 65, you may qualify for a Medicare plan. Medicare open enrollment is from October 15 to December 7, 2025. Medicare beneficiaries in the District can review, switch, or update their coverage for plans that begin January 1, 2026.
As the AARP DC Volunteer State President, I am proud to represent 68,000 AARP members in the District, and on behalf of them and all older District residents, we are advocating for a budget that honors their dignity and needs. For the District’s FY2026 budget, our message is clear: District seniors deserve their fair share of the pie.

Bridging the Justice Gap for Vulnerable Washington, D.C. Elders
Sheridan’s Community Action Team (CAT) saddled up for a meaningful cause during this year’s annual WYO Rodeo Parade, bringing AARP’s fraud prevention message to thousands along the parade route. With the spirited theme, “AARP: Lassoing Fraud,” CAT members creatively spotlighted the importance of protecting seniors and the community from scams and financial fraud.
AARP Wyoming and United Way's 211 service have partnered to expand access to caregiver support resources. This collaboration allows caregivers to easily connect with local 211 specialists who can help them find services like transportation, food delivery, home safety, respite care, and more. The 211 service is a free, confidential, 24/7 helpline available in multiple languages. Simply dial 211
This summer marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security—one of the most important and effective programs in American history. Since 1935, it has been a lifeline for millions of Americans, providing critical financial support and peace of mind after a lifetime of hard work.

Coconut Grove, a historic neighborhood in Miami-Dade County, is home to one of this year’s AARP Community Challenge Grant winners: Friends of the Commodore Trail. This five-and-a-half-mile nature trail has been a popular place for walking, biking, and socializing. However, it’s also much more to the community – this trail connects 13 parks and 12 schools, is a wildlife corridor, and gives neighbors a way to meet each other.
