AARP Alabama is working with the Alabama Lifespan Respite Coalition to raise awareness of the demands of caregiving and to engage faith-based groups in efforts to relieve stress on caregivers.

Alabama has about 818,000 family caregivers, and the estimated value of their unpaid contributions is more than $7.3 billion, according to a 2011 AARP report.

AARP is distributing its “Prepare to Care: A Planning Guide for Families” to chapters across the state, along with a tool kit developed by the coalition to help faith communities build caregiving teams. Each chapter, in turn, will contact houses of worship in the area.
