Even as some of you are hearing the last notes of the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” we at AARP Florida are about to embark on “The Busiest Time of the Year”, the Florida legislative session. Advocacy is a core part of AARP’s mission, and at the state level, the legislative session is a rich if frenetic opportunity to advocate on a wide range of issues on behalf of Floridians ages 50 and over.

AARP Florida recently welcomed two new communications experts to the team. Rick DelaHaya will serve as Director of Communications for Florida, and Maryanna Antoldi will serve as Associate State Director of Communications in the Orlando and Jacksonville regions.
After retiring from his job in aviation, Ken Thomas, 69, volunteered to help at an AARP convention in Florida. “They liked what they saw in me, and I enjoyed what I saw in AARP,” he says.

A new comprehensive report of staffing levels in Florida nursing homes found a significant decline in nursing professionals which correlates to changes in state law the Legislature made last year and worker shortages.
The AARP report is part of an ongoing study commissioned in collaboration with Dr. Lindsay Peterson, an assistant professor at the University of South Florida (USF), Director of the Long-term Care Administration and Aging Sciences Internship Program, and Interim Director of the Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging.
On June 15, AARP Florida joined the Claude Pepper Elder Law Clinic to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
Nominations for this year’s award will be accepted through September 30 and need to be submitted online at www.aarp.org/AndrusAward
Each year on June 15, AARP Florida recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) by participating in events across the state that share resources, spread awareness, and help prevent elder abuse.
AARP Florida showed up as a wise friend and fierce defender during legislative session, advocating on topics that matter most to the 50+ in the Sunshine State. AARP emerged from the session with big wins across the board, from enhanced long-term care systems to broadened housing options.
