More than a third of Mississippians age 60-plus receive help with heating and cooling costs through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Yet the numbers suggest many who are eligible do not apply.
AARP is reaching out to older residents to let them know they can apply for help through the cold-weather period of October through April. Last year, 33,406 Mississippi households got help to stay warm.
Individuals with an annual income up to $17,990 are eligible, and the income limit rises for larger households. People age 60 and older get priority. Call 800-421-0762 or 601-359-4768 for information on how to apply.
