Mississippi’s population is aging. The Census Bureau estimates that by 2030, a fourth of state residents will be 60 and older, and that means more people will be retiring. AARP Mississippi is offering workshops to help people plan for a financially secure future.
Retirees have certain advantages in Mississippi. The state does not impose taxes on qualified retirement income and gives a property tax break to people 65 and older. But Mississippians depend heavily on Social Security, with 31 percent of beneficiaries in the state relying on the program for at least 90 percent of their income.
A Financial Freedom Training session will be held April 21 in Gulfport. The free three-hour workshop begins at 5 p.m. at the Knight Nonprofit Center, 11975 Seaway Road.
