Hot Tips for the Extreme Cold

Safety tips for the extreme cold

Personal question – how many layers are you wearing?  I checked in with my mom this morning, who told me that she could barely fit into her car to get to church what with all her bundling up. (No surprise there - this is the woman who lugs a sweater, jacket, and quilt to the beach on a 90 degree day – “just in case.”)

All joking aside, though many of us born-and-bred New Englanders take a perverse pleasure in ranting about the weather, there are some serious dangers to the bitter cold.  So as you pull on your unfashionable ear flap hat (mine is red), please check on your older relatives and neighbors to make sure they are safe and comfortable.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has some common sense tips to keep in mind, including, yes, dressing in layers (mothers do know best), minimizing outside activities, and making sure you have plenty of heating fuel at home.

Call Mass211 to find the locations of any Warming Centers that may be open in your community.
