It's that time of year again: Medicare Enrollment

Doctor or Nurse Explaining Prescription Medicine to Attentive Senior Couple.
Andy Dean Photography

It’s that time of year again: Medicare Open Enrollment. AARP encourages all Medicare beneficiaries to review their health and prescription drug plan choices for 2016 during open enrollment (October 15th – December 7th). With the explosive rise in prescription drug prices, consumers should pay particular attention to their drug coverage options to help save money.

On October 29, 2015 AARP Iowa was pleased to host Kris Gross, director of Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and SHIIP staffer Patty Price for a live teletown hall answering Iowan's questions about Medicare Open Enrollment. Listen to a recording of the event to find out what Iowans want to know about the 2016 program.

Medicare plans can change their costs and benefits every calendar year. Insurers must notify all their enrollees of any plan changes for 2016 before the end of September. AARP strongly recommends that people read these notices carefully, compare the details of their current plan with other available plans, and change to a different one if they want to. People happy with their current plans do not need to do anything—reenrollment occurs automatically.

To talk with a local Medicare counselor or for assistance with Medicare Part D enrollment, choosing a Medicare plan, plan review or income assistance, call Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program or SHIIP at 1-9-800-351-4664 or www.TheRightCall.gov.
