Aug. 14, 2015 is the 80th anniversary of the signing of Social Security into law in 1935.  To mark the occasion, AARP Iowa is hosting a State Fair-themed Social Security celebration tent open from 10 am to 7 pm with games, prizes, birthday cake and cake-on-stick at the Iowa State Fair.

At 11 am, AARP members, the media and Iowa State Fair-goers are invited to attend a brief ceremony with AARP Iowa state leaders, volunteers, two members of Iowa’s Congressional delegation, which will include a release of new national survey on Social Security, remarks from Senator Chuck Grassley and Representative David Young, and cake-cutting.

The event celebrates the important role Social Security plays in the financial security of American families as we celebrate 80 years of the program and transition to asking all 2016 Presidential candidates to talk about their solutions for ensuring the long-term strength and sustainability of the program as they campaign at the State Fair and throughout Iowa this season.

In addition to the celebratory activities, the tent will also have information about Social Security, with the Social Security Administration and Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program on hand to answer fairgoers’ questions.

AARP leaders including Martha Willits, AARP Iowa State President and Members of Iowa’s Congressional Delegation, Senator Chuck Grassley and Representative David Young will be there along with AARP Iowa volunteers from across the state and Iowa State Fair-goers.
