The season of giving may be over, but for too many Americans, getting enough food remains a year-round struggle.
AARP Maryland is gearing up for a Harvest for the Hungry drive, Feb. 27-March 5. In cooperation with other organizations, AARP staff and volunteers will collect groceries at Safeway stores to replenish food bank shelves depleted during the holidays. Safeway will make it easy for shoppers to participate by selling prepackaged bags of healthy groceries for $10.
In Maryland, nearly 14 percent of adults age 60-plus do not always know where they will get their next meal. Those at risk of hunger are five times more likely to suffer from depression and are at higher risk of infections and extended hospital stays.
