The season of giving brings about holiday cheer that so many are thrilled to celebrate. With Christmas right around the corner we know everyone is busy finding the perfect gifts for loved ones, decorating trees with ornaments, and spending quality time with family. With all those never ending to-do lists and bargain hunting, many are unaware of the possibility of fraud and scams. Unfortunately, amidst all of the wonderful festivities, some people on Santa’s ”naughty list” are ready to catch you off guard. The season of giving also attracts scammers looking for their next victim. AARP has you covered on different ways to avoid holiday scams, so that you can remain merry.
The Magnolia State has a shortage of medical personnel, which limits access to care—especially in rural areas. The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration estimates the state will have a third fewer primary care physicians than needed by 2025—as well as a shortage of nurses.
Are you a leader who is driven by helping others? AARP Mississippi is looking for a State President, the organization's highest volunteer position. The State President works closely with the State Director, volunteers and staff as they help the 50-plus population live their best lives. The Magnolia State is home to about 500,000 family caregivers who provide unpaid services to help aging loved ones continue to live at home. AARP Mississippi is recruiting advocacy volunteers to help pass legislation in 2018 that could help caregiving families.
This year, AARP Mississippi is presenting Veterans Town Halls throughout the state. So far, the events have been held in Southaven and Richland.

(Ridgeland, MS) - AARP Mississippi is inviting all veterans in the area to attend the AARP Veterans Town Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The free event will be held at the Biloxi Civic Center, 578 Howard Avenue in Biloxi. Veterans may bring one guest. Lunch will be served.
(Ridgeland, MS) — The city of Gulfport has won the AARP Community Challenge, which aims to create change and improve quality of life at the community level. Gulfport won for its proposal to develop a Bark Park. Each winning project throughout the nation was partially or fully funded through the AARP Community Challenge grant and is set to be completed by November 1, 2017.
