As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older adults—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Elizabeth (Lizz) McGrady is a long-time AARP New Jersey volunteer who has contributed 16 years of dedication and hard work to the organization, and currently leads AARP Chapter 5398 of the Newark University Area as president. But even beyond AARP, Lizz has been an active volunteer who continues to give back to her community.
