Recognizes, Addresses Needs of NY’s Fastest-Growing Population

ALBANY, N.Y.AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today on the announcement of an Executive Order to create a State Master Plan for Aging:

“Creation of a Master Plan for Aging is a tremendous and welcome step forward in recognizing and addressing the needs of New York’s fastest-growing population.

“AARP New York applauds this new focus on older New Yorkers, and we hope this signals a new era that reflects the reality that by 2030 a quarter of New York’s population will be age 60 or over.

“We are pleased that the Master Plan for Aging Council will focus on ‘planning necessary to keep and improve New York’s standing as one of the most age-friendly states,’ with New York having been the first state to commit to the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

“We’re also glad the Stakeholder Advisory Committee will include a group dedicated to long-term care services and supports, community-based services, and family caregivers – all of which play a critical role in helping older New Yorkers age with dignity.

“AARP New York supports this rethinking of how we approach aging, and this affirmation that people 50-plus are valued, respected, and deserve to live in healthy, safe communities that meet their needs.

“A coordinated approach to meet the needs of New York’s older population is not only compassionate but smart; older adults and Baby Boomers generate 63% of household income statewide.

“We look forward to working with the State to ensure this blueprint for our older residents is as strong as possible. To that point, we will urge the State to include in next year’s state budget increased funding for, among other things:

  • Home- and community-based services for older New Yorkers – including more aid for respite care to prevent family caregiver burnout;
  • The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program – the independent overseer of New York’s nursing homes and adult care facilities, and;
  • The Access to Home Program, which helps people with disabilities afford needed modifications so they can continue living in their homes.”
