ALBANY, N.Y. - AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel released the following statement today in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to toughen penalties for identity theft and other cybercrimes:
“Identity theft is a growing concern for older New Yorkers, and AARP applauds Governor Cuomo for proposing that state law be modernized to address the increasing sophistication and magnitude of cybercrime – and combat the devastation it inflicts on New Yorkers’ lives. Imposing tougher penalties the more egregious the crime makes sense and should serve as a deterrent. And AARP is particularly pleased by the Governor’s proposal to impose harsher punishments for thefts committed against seniors and the mentally and physically disabled.”
