AARPNY Celebrates 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month

En español| AARP New York is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 by honoring the cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latin Americans with a variety of virtual events, a movie screening, educational workshops, fitness classes, and flamenco classes.

And, this is just the beginning!

Advanced registration is required, and registrants will be sent details before the date of the program. You can register for one or all of our classes!

1. Join AARPNY for Free screening of “Decade of Fire”
AARPNY and Red Nut Films are proud to host a free screening of "Decade of Fire" - a documentary about the South Bronx in the 1970’s when nearly half a million people were displaced as their community was burnt to the ground.

Learn the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's disease, hear from people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others. Same Virtual Presentation also available in SPANISH

4. Flamenco for 50+, An Introduction to Flamenco Online Workshops
Join us on Zoom for an “Introduction to Flamenco Dance”, during Hispanic Heritage month where AARP members and guests can enjoy a brief lecture on the history and context of flamenco dance and its origins. You will have the opportunity to practice the basic movements of the dance.  Conducted by María de los Ángeles, Co-Artistic Director of Al Margen Flamenco Company. 

All classes will start at 6 PM.  Registration is required for these FREE workshops.

6. Vivan Las Voces presented by AARP and StoryCorps
AARP, In collaboration with StoryCorps, is proud to present “Vivan Las Voces(Long live the voices), a national audio story collection project dedicated to capturing the diverse stories and experiences of the U.S. Latino community.

Stories are captured through a conversation format, typically person-to-person, and participation is easy, fun, and rewarding.  You simply invite a loved one, or anyone else you choose, to join you on the free StoryCorps Connect online video conferencing platform to share a 40-minute conversation. 

Participation in Vivan Las Voces is open to anyone interested in capturing something special about a loved one’s life through the easy-to-use StoryCorps platform. Conversations can be recorded in English, Spanish, or a mix of the two today by visiting www.storycorpsconnect.org.
