AARP New York celebrates Black History Month.
Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States. It honors important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. To learn more about the meaning and history of this holiday, visit The Origins of Black History Month available online at The Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
This year, AARP New York is excited to celebrate the accomplishments of prominent African American/Black New Yorkers who have been given the title “age disruptors.”
This year we have selected:

Vy Higginsen, Executive Director, Mama Foundation for the Arts (LISTEN)
Marc Clarke, Radio Host- Radio 103.9 New York (LISTEN)
Onida Coward Mayers, Director of Voter Assistance, NYC Votes
Every Saturday in February tune in at 8AM to Radio 103.9 to hear AARP’s own Reggie Nance talk one-on-one which each of these accomplished individuals. And find out how AARP makes a world of things possible for all New Yorkers especially when it comes to financial education, advocacy, protecting yourself against frauds and scams, giving back to your community, saving money with discounts and of course, having fun with free movies, discounted concerts and events and so much more!
Additionally, all month long, AARP will honor each of these individuals on our Facebook page. Like our page to get real time updates on all AARP New York activities.
What more do we have planned?
- On February 11, Please join AARP’s Reggie Nance at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 132 West 138th St, Harlem New York, 10030 at 11AM for a panel discussion on “Caregiving for Loved Ones With Alzheimer’s and Dementia.”
- On Saturday, February 25 at 4pm, as part of AARP's celebration of Black History Month, AARP members and their guests can enjoy a night of theatre

- The Create the Good Dream Builders Contest invited the general public to submit a video entry, between January 16 – February 7, about a “dream” volunteer project they were currently working on or wanted to carry out in their community in collaboration with a non-profit. The entries will be narrowed down by an internal panel of judges, and then the grand prize winner and three finalists will be determined by a public vote. Visit here to cast your vote between February 15 and 28 . The non-profit organization cited in the grand prize winning entry will receive a $2,500 donation to help support his or her dream project. The non-profits named by three finalists will receive $500 donations each to help build their dreams as well.Create the Good Dream Builders Contest
