Celebrate Veterans with AARP New York!

AARP members and guests are invited to celebrate Veterans this November! AARP New York is proud to observe National Veterans and Military Families Month with several events and promoting various resources that include Family Caregiving, Work/Jobs, Re-careering, and Fighting Fraud. AARP stands with its NY veteran members, non-members, allies, and partner organizations year-round. AARP’s commitment to the Veterans, Military, and Families reflects our core belief in every individual’s dignity, worth and potential.

As a family caregiver, you may be responsible for managing and administering lots of medication. If you have medications in your home that are no longer needed or expired, AARP Long Island encourages you to dispose of them safely this November. AARP Long Island is hosting important events to safely discard unwanted pharmaceuticals during the “Shed-and-Shred” event: Shed-The-Meds and Shred-The-Paper – for FREE! We are also helping you fight back against fraud and help protect yourself from identity theft by shredding your sensitive personal documents.

2. AARP Veterans Scam Prevention Telephone Town Hall | Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.

Fraud and scams are rampant lately and scammers target veterans and their families. Our Fraud Watch Network and the Better Business Bureau will be offering helpful information to help Veterans and their families spot and avoid scams. We will offer information about where to report scams and fraud when encountered. There will be time for questions and answers.

3. PBMC Northwell Health Family Caregivers Retreat Day | Wednesday, November 8th, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

AARP Long Island is proud to help sponsor this in-person Caregivers Retreat Day that provides family caregivers with access to valuable community resources, education, activities to promote self care and an opportunity to connect with family caregivers.

The Caregivers Program and the Caregivers Center at Peconic Bay Medical Center - Northwell Health provides family caregivers with emotional and ongoing support and resources throughout their caregiver journey. This event requires free registration to attend.

4. Changing the Conversation: Caregiving in the 21st Century Conference at Hofstra University| Thursday, November 9, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

5. IAC's Annual Veteran's Wellness Art Exhibition |Friday, November 10, 2023 to Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This AARP exhibition will complement IAC's annual Veteran's Wellness Art Exhibition that focuses on bringing awareness to PTSD and mental health. AARP Long Island is proud to collaborate on an exhibition with the Islip Arts Council for an open call to artists over 50, for the "Veterans Wellness - Friends and Families" exhibit! It will be held from November 10 – December 2, 2023, at the Islip Arts Council Gallery, in the South Shore Mall. The art pieces should celebrate or honor those who served in our military. The works can be a range in style from contemporary art to abstract, multimedia, photography or sculptures.

FSL SeniorNet, in collaboration with AARP Long Island, is lending a hand this end of year, by offering a series of free technology support on smartphones, tablets and computers!

Meet with one of the FSL instructors to learn solutions to common problems you are experiencing with your laptop, smartphone or tablet such as: having difficulty texting on your smart phone; needing help with a setting on your laptop, putting a shortcut on your iPad or iPhone, learning how to use QR codes, why it is taking so long to boot your laptop or connect to the Internet?

Bring your fully charged laptop, smartphone, iPad or tablet along with your user ID and password. We will help you understand what is happening and how to fix it.
