November is Family Caregiving Month and Military Family Month.  As a family caregiver, you may be responsible for managing and administering lots of medication. If you have medications in your home that are no longer needed or expired, AARP Long Island encourages you to dispose of them safely this November.

AARP Long Island is hosting important events to safely discard unwanted pharmaceuticals during the “Shed-and-Shred” event: Shed-The-Meds and Shred-The-Paper – for FREE!

During this drive-through drop-off event, everyone will have the opportunity to securely dispose of unwanted and/or expired medication, and other pharmaceutical waste.  We are also helping you fight back against fraud and help protect yourself from identity theft by shredding your sensitive personal documents.

Regarding meds disposal:

  • Accepted items: YES prescriptions, prescription medications, sample medications and pet medications
  • Drop off instructions:  Keep all medications in original containers, block out name for anonymity, do not cross out medication information
  • We cannot accept: NO Needles, sharps, syringes, aerosol cans, liquid medications, thermometers, hydrogen peroxide, inhalers, liquids, creams, lotions, biohazardous waste and medications from businesses.

Regarding paper shredding:

  • You may bring up to three bags/boxes of paper to shred per vehicle.
  • Metal, plastic, and other materials will not be accepted.
  • Paper shredding truck will stay on-site for the time scheduled or until it reaches capacity.
