Fair Fares for New Yorkers

Under New York City’s new budget, low-income New Yorkers can hop on subways and buses for half the normal fare starting in January.

About 800,000 city residents living below the poverty line will be able to purchase half-price MetroCards through the Fair Fares program. That includes individuals with annual income of up to $12,140 and couples with income of up to $16,460. Savings are expected to average $726 a year.

“This is an important step in making New York a more affordable and fairer place to live for residents of all ages,” said Beth Finkel, AARP state director.

The city budget includes $106 million to cover the discounts for six months, with additional funding promised in future budgets. In communities where many retirees live, another $1 million was budgeted for services that can help them age in place.
