Invest Safely: Tips from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission

Couple writing on notepad

AARP members and guests are invited to join us for four Zoom webinars with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

All events are at 1:00 PM ET

1.) October 20: Investing for Older Americans

Many older adults have made the bulk of their investment decisions by the time they retire – including whether and how much to save, whether to participate in an employer’s 401(k), and how to roll over and invest retirement funds. But some are still moving money around in the markets and considering new or different investments. AARP invites experts from the SEC to review some information about investing that everyone should understand. Speaker: Steve Tencer, Securities Compliance Examiner with the US SEC.

2.) October 27: Investment Professionals: What you should know about Brokers and Investment Advisors

Some investors choose to work with investment professionals. The SEC regulates many types of financial professionals, including: Broker-Dealers and Investment Advisers. If you choose to work with an investment professional, it is important to make sure that they provide the products and services that align with your investment objectives and that you understand how you will pay for their products and services. Speaker: Damien DiMaggio, Securities Compliance Examiner, US SEC

3.) November 3: Pyramid Schemes

All pyramid schemes eventually collapse, and most investors lose their money. Learn the hallmarks of a pyramid scheme. When fraudsters attempt to make money solely by recruiting new participants into a program, that is a pyramid scheme, and there is only one possible mathematical result – collapse. Speaker: Barry E. Simmons, Esq., Regulatory Counsel, US SEC

4.) November 10: Protect Yourself from Investment Scams

An introduction to the common warning signs of investment fraud and some of the most common investment scams. Plus, a special warning about scams committed by people we may trust called: affinity fraud. We will also provide some tips to keep fraudsters from stealing your hard-earned money and a look at the SEC resources that can help. Speaker: Majid Mahmood, Examination Manager, US SEC

Join us to learn how to invest safely and avoid common pitfalls and scams. Protect your hard-earned savings by putting your investment plan to the test with experts from the US Securities Exchange Commission.
