This year you have not one, not two, not three, but four volunteer opportunities for AARP’s Day of Service on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. Join us in McAlester, Oklahoma City, Shawnee or Tulsa as we roll up our sleeves to participate in local community service projects. AARP staff and volunteers will be volunteering at the local food banks in Oklahoma City, Shawnee and Tulsa. In McAlester, volunteers will assemble backpacks with food for children needing nutritional snacks on the weekends.

The battle to protect your identity is getting a little easier – or at least cheaper. A new law goes into effect September 21 that will make it free to lock your credit file by freezing it with the three major credit rating companies.

Join AARP Oklahoma and KOTV News on 6 Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer for a special weather safety seminar on August 27. Keeping you and your loved ones safe is the purpose of this free event. Travis will talk about the drastic changes in weather forecasting, what that means as we age and why are safer now. He will also discuss weather unknowns, the importance of easy, accessible storm (safe) rooms and how new ideas are helping make it easier to get access safe room spaces. Travis will end his presentation with a look to the future. Attendees will have an opportunity for a question and answer period to end the evening, as well as a special meet-and-greet with Travis Meyer.

Vinita, Okla., August 21, 2018 -- Downtown Vinita will soon be more pedestrian-friendly, thanks to a $25,000 grant from AARP and its 2018 Community Challenge grant program.

AARP members who receive their electricity from OG&E recently took action and received a historic decrease in their rates. Now it’s time for you to do the same. Right now, PSO is trying to keep $428 million dollars of your money. Recently passed tax savings were supposed to be returned to you, but instead PSO wants to keep the savings for themselves. We need your help in asking the corporation commissioners to say No to PSO and make sure the over collected taxes are returned to you.

All charity scams are deplorable, but those pretending to raise funds to support our nation’s veterans are particularly shameful. Last week, the Federal Trade Commission, along with state charities regulators, announced a major takedown of fake veteran charities. AARP is hosting the FTC for two hour long national Tele-Town Halls on the subject today at 10:10 am and 2:00 pm (both times Eastern).
