Keeping current with safe-driving techniques can save lives and lower your car insurance bill. AARP South Carolina wants motorists to know that the popular AARP Smart Driver course, designed for people 50 and older, is available online.

The AARP Smart Driver course is designed to sharpen skills and safety awareness. Under state law, residents 55-plus who complete a recognized “mature driver improvement course” can qualify for reduced insurance premiums.

Tennessee drivers 55 and older can get a three-year discount on their auto insurance if they take the AARP Smart Driver class and maintain a safe driving record. Discounts typically vary from 5 to 10 percent off.

AARP’s popular Driver Safety program is recruiting more local instructors.

More than 4,000 Michigan motorists earn or renew their AARP Smart Driver certificate each year. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the course has moved fully online via an easy-to-navigate program that works on computers, tablets and smartphones.

Under Colorado law, residents 55 and older who complete the AARP Smart Driver course qualify for a three-year discount on their auto policy premiums, depending on their insurance carrier.

AARP NC supports SB20 because based on action in other states, it will reduce crashes that result in fatalities and serious injuries. We advocate for communities that are more livable and age-friendly, including safer transportation networks. In addition, with decreased collision repair costs and medical expenses due to less distracted driving crashes, the NC Insurance Commissioner has said that insurance rates should decrease, which is important to our members, especially those on limited fixed incomes. The hands-free driving law is a common sense, enforceable approach to the problem of distracted driving.
