Gardena, CA – At a ceremony today at the Second Time Around Senior Club, Representative Maxine Waters (CD 43) was presented with AARP’s “Champion of 50+” award, in recognition of her strong support for a new U.S. Department of Labor rule, which requires that retirement plan advice be given in the best interest of consumers – a rule which could save American families billions of dollars per year. Rep. Waters also voted AGAINST legislation that would have stopped the rule from taking effect.

As kids we spent many long hours in our neighborhood playing games of kick the can. Now, as mid-life adults, we are too preoccupied with life to think about the kick the can game or even the symbolic “can” for our generation: Social Security. As a society, continuing to “kick the can down the road,” means failing to find solutions to shore up the Social Security program.

It was a joint venture between AARP and the National Committee designed to bring awareness to the importance of safeguarding Social security's future by finding commonsense, non-partisan solutions to update the program.
