As the economy picks up steam and the job market strengthens, it may be easy to forget the serious problem of long-term unemployment. Three million Americans, 45 percent of whom are age 55+, have been actively looking for work for 27 weeks or longer without success. This rate of long-term unemployment —near record levels in our country — harms our economy and robs businesses of valuable workers.

North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem this week said the state’s residents are being inundated with scam telephone calls. He warned that scam artists are specifically targeting the state’s senior population, finding new victims with scams that have been circulating for many years.

AARP NY Commends NYC Comptroller for Tackling Worsening Problem
Con artists don’t care how hard you worked. Identity theft, investment fraud and scams rob millions of Americans of their hard-earned money every year. Research shows that more than $20 billion was stolen from about 13 million victims in 2012, according the latest Javelin Strategy and Research reports on identity fraud. Older adults tend to be bilked out of about $3 billion every year.
Over the past seven years, Kellianne Erath of Framingham has helped more than 14 Bay State residents manage some of the most private details of their lives — their finances. Erath, along with more than 1,000 other volunteers, dedicates her time and skills to help others through the Massachusetts Money Management Program.
This year, AARP Foundation is again providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low to moderate income through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 48th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention the older population. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service.
