Beginning February 1 and continuing through April 17, AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, celebrating its 50th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. Since its inception, the program has served more than 50 million taxpayers.

The president has signed into law an AARP-backed bill that requires the federal government to develop a strategy to support the 40 million Americans who care for a loved one.

As state lawmakers near a key deadline, the 2018 legislative session’s first funnel of February 16, AARP Iowa is urging lawmakers to pass the 2018 Iowa CARE (Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable) Act. The bill (SSB 3123), with no cost to the state or taxpayers, would provide vital support for Iowa’s more than 317,000 family caregivers who help their older parents, spouses and other loved ones live safely and independently at home.

The favorite holiday of our proud state falls on Friday, March 2. While a weekend trip to the San Antonio Southside Missions is a popular way to commemorate our state’s independence, as a Texan, you’re probably not too keen on following the herd.

AARP Delaware enjoys collaborating with the Colored Conventions Project, and there’s no better time celebrate its work than the month of February, Black History Month. The group, housed at University of Delaware, has been working to research what are known as the Colored Conventions, a series of state-wide and national meetings that began in 1830 and continued until the end of the 19 th century. Over seven decades, free, fugitive and freed African Americans came together to strategize about how to achieve educational, labor and legal justice during the gatherings, advocating for freedom in the North and South and from laws which denied African Americans basic legal and educational rights.

Black History Month is an annual celebration commemorating African Americans who contributed to the monumental movement of equal rights for men and women in our society. The month of February allows individuals to pay homage by reflecting on the past, while focusing on the future. In commemoration of Black History Month, AARP is offering a free admission day to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018. The first 300 people will enter free of charge.
