South Carolina is one of a dozen states that have not expanded Medicaid, the health insurer of last resort for low-income people, children and those with disabilities.

Last Tuesday, the SC DHEC’s board voted to distribute the COVID vaccine by population numbers only. The alternative voted down was to provide earlier distribution of vaccines to areas with higher numbers of seniors and other vulnerable populations.

AARP priorities in 2021 include expanded visitation (in person and virtual) in nursing homes, better reporting on conditions and the need for Medicaid expansion to improve access to care for low-income residents.
