Caregiving can be physically and financially stressful. And for those caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, the emotional burden can be nearly unbearable. The disease may cause the loved one to lash out at or fail to recognize the person tending to their needs.
For Virgin Islands caregivers, relief is available. Funded by a federal grant, the V.I. Family Caregiver Support Program holds monthly meetings to help caregivers attend to their own physical and mental health. The program also provides some reimbursement for respite care.
