State lawmakers this year voted to give Iowa food banks up to $1 million as a dollar-for-dollar match of private donations. Now the eight food banks must raise an equal amount in private funds in order to receive all the state dollars.

AARP is encouraging Iowans to make a donation or give their time and energy to make a difference for state residents who don’t have enough to eat.

Hunger affects 1 in 8 Iowans—nearly 400,000 people, including more than 150,000 age 50 or older.

The easiest way to donate is to visit iowafooddrive.com. To volunteer, call the Iowa Food Bank Association at 319-234-0776.
