AARP “Smart Driver,” courses are open to AARP members and non-members of all ages and are available in a classroom or online setting. In 36 states and the District of Columbia, insurance discounts are mandated. Other states offer the discount on a voluntary basis
AARP Driver Safety Volunteer State Coordinator Position Description
The State Coordinator, an unpaid volunteer, manages, coaches, motivates and provides direction to AARP Driver Safety (ADS) volunteers at the local level to grow the program in a state.
Develops, implements and evaluates program goals and objectives for the state.
Provides leadership to the ADS team in planning and carrying out program activities.
Appoints, trains and supervises leadership volunteers within the state.
Develops and monitors the program budget for the state.
Reviews monthly budget and participation reports to assess state’s performance to date.
Maintains timely communication and contact with volunteers in the state.
Ensures timely and appropriate responses are provided to requests from potential class participants, hosts and volunteer candidates.
Works cooperatively with the ADS Regional Coordinator, ADS National Office Staff and the AARP State Office.
Works with the VMIS Data Manager to ensure the state’s records are accurate and up to date.
Plans and conducts the DS State Meeting and assists with other meetings as needed.
Actively seeks to involve diverse populations, businesses and organizations in ADS activities.

Appointment is for two years with the option by the supervisor to reappoint for a total of 6 years.
