AARP Urges Action in Age Discrimination

By MaxPa

AARP California is working with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to address age discrimination in industries that have a reputation for age stereotyping, especially entertainment and high-tech.

With boomers on track to become nearly a quarter of the workforce within five years, the state’s continued high unemployment rate makes hiring discrimination an especially important issue. AARP is urging EEOC officials in Los Angeles and San Francisco to target discrimination in these industries, as well as in cases involving workers who have caregiving duties—a group that is growing as the population ages.

AARP urges government attention to discriminatory practices that especially hit older workers, such as using birth dates on job applications as a way to screen applicants.
