Ron L. Swanda, a dedicated volunteer advocate for Washington, DC’s older residents and a member of the AARP DC Executive Council, has been appointed to serve on Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Age-Friendly DC Task Force. The Task Force is an advisory group that evaluates and reports to the Mayor and the Age-Friendly DC Office on the needs and concerns of older D.C. citizens. Swanda, a Washington, DC Ward 6 resident for 32 years, has been a long-time advocate on issues for older people and also serves as Vice Chair for the D.C. Commission on Aging.

Issues include Social Security, protecting older workers against age discrimination, livable communities and anti‐fraud protection. Ms. Bessick, a senior advisor in the AARP Campaigns Department, also will cover health care issues like Medicare, Medicaid, long‐ term care, and caregiving. Join Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) and Senior Medicare Patrol for a FREE Fraud Awareness Forum and Community Shred Event on Thursday, May 28. The shred event is scheduled from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. ET, and the fraud forum from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. ET. Hear from experts from the Federal Trade Commission and AARP Fraud Watch Network on how to prevent identity theft. The event will be held at the Washington Seniors Wellness Center (3001 Alabama Ave, SE, D.C.). Call 1-877-926-8300 to register for the forum. To participate in the shred event, drive up to the parking lot of the Wellness Center with up to three boxes of materials to shred.
