America’s Vets Have a New Enemy: Scammers!
Over 100,000 people in Washington state live with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, and that number continues to grow. For many people with memory loss, social stigma and barriers to inclusion can lead to shame, fear, and isolation. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. We recognize that people with memory loss are a vital part of our communities, retain remarkable strengths and stories, and deserve the right to fully participate. Here in Washington state, we’re joining the worldwide movement to build dementia-friendly communities.
AARP Washington would like to say thank you our outgoing Driver Safety State Coordinator, Gordon Olson. Gordon steps down from the top volunteer leadership role after serving two four year terms, managing 130 volunteers in Washington State.
Dan and Joyce Leonard of Colton have been recognized by AARP Washington for exemplary volunteerism and community service. AARP Washington recognized Dan and Joyce, along with two others, as part of the 2016 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service. The Andrus Award is AARP’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service to honor individuals and couples for their remarkable volunteer efforts that have greatly benefited their communities, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. In Dan and Joyce's honor, AARP is donating $500 to a charity of their choice.
The director of the Ocean Shores Food Bank has been named the recipient of the 2016 AARP Ethel Percy Andrus Award for Community Service for Washington State. The Andrus Award is AARP's most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service. AARP Washington selected Leon Brauner for his remarkable service which has greatly benefited his community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers.
In recognition of National Family Caregiving Month, Bank of America has put together an infographic with facts and tips for caregivers. Caregivers are a top priority for AARP and we are working with others like Bank of America to bring much-needed support and information for this rapidly growing group. boa-eldercare-infogrphaic-v43 .
Join us for AARP Washington's Day in Olympia on February 14th. We'll meet in the Columbia Room on the ground floor of the Capitol for a discussion of the issues of concern to Washingtonians age 50+ and talk about how to take action in the Legislative session. Hear from legislators, AARP staff and volunteers, and special guests. You'll also have an opportunity to meet with your state lawmakers.
AARP is teaming up with BECU to help fight financial fraud through a free shredding event. On Saturday, October 22nd, members can safely dispose of their sensitive personal paperwork at three BECU locations in Tukwila, Federal Way and Everett.
