Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy held a press conference in New Britain, CT on January 27 where he announced new initiatives designed to help unemployed workers, particularly those over age 50, find a job. A highlight of his proposal was legislation "that will prohibit an employer or an employment agency from advertising a job opening stating that an individual must be currently employed for consideration for a position; or directing or requesting an employment agency to screen applicants based on employment status. Unfortunately, this practice has become all too prevalent in Connecticut and across the country, making it even more difficult for workers over age 50 - who tend to be out of work longer than younger job seekers - to find a job.
As the countdown to tax day begins, Connecticut residents can count on AARP to help manage tax time stress. From February 1 through April 15, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation program, helps taxpayers with basic federal and state income tax returns.
With more snow and freezing temps in the forecast, you can bet that we haven't seen the last of winter weather here in CT and across the Northeast. You can help make sure that vulnerable older adults get the help they need to pay for high heating bills or other repairs due to the particularly harsh winter. The AARP Foundation has established a relief fund to support older adults suffering from the severe cold weather, particularly here in the Northeast and in the Midwest. AARP and its members are committed to helping those in need; so to support these emergency relief efforts AARP and AARP Foundation will match dollar-for-dollar contributions up to $250,000, which could mean up to $500,000 in aid. The matching program will be administered through AARP Foundation.

It's the holiday season and many of us are planning parties and festive holiday meals. But for many in our nation, the holidays are not so festive, especially for those struggling just to put food on the table. Every day, nearly 9 million older adults age 50 and over are at risk for hunger. To help, End Hunger Connecticut! and AARP Foundation are continuing their partnership to help end senior hunger this fall, by hosting free infosessions at senior centers, leading town hall meetings and distributing educational materials at libraries and physicians’ offices. The organizations also are building upon a successful direct mail campaign launched earlier in 2013 to connect food insecure seniors to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). A second mailing began hitting the households of about 50,000 older adults in late October.
