AARP released results of a survey this week as we celebrate the 80 th Anniversary of Social Security on August 14, 2015. Americans of all ages continue to have strong feelings of support for Social Security, and the survey found several key themes. According to the national survey of adults, Social Security remains a core part of retirement security, and remains popular across generations and political ideologies. Americans want to live independently, but face challenges around saving for retirement that underscore the importance of Social Security for future generations of beneficiaries.

Dr. Lois J. Ricci (2nd from right) is a long-time AARP volunteer and serves as a member of the AARP Georgia Executive Council. Lois was a facilitator /instructor for AARP’s Wise Use of Medicines Program, The Caregiver Support Program, and the 50+ worker Project. Each of these programs provided a valuable tool for the aging population and older adults. This week Dr. Ricci was installed as a board member for the Georgia Gerontology Society during their annual conference.

AARP applauds the bipartisan action on S. 192, the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA), introduced by Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) with Senators Richard Burr (R-NC), Patty Murray (D-WA), and Bernie Sanders (I-VT). The Senate passed the bill the same week that we celebrated the 50 th Anniversary of the OAA.

The team of AARP Tax-Aide volunteers serving residents at Gwinnett Technical College this tax season set a new record. The team of about 17 volunteers filed 1,026 returns, compared to 921 last year.

Presented by AARP, this single event launches an annual fundraising campaign with a goal to raise over $50K for local families with children living with Sickle Cell Anemia.
