Gardena, CA – At a ceremony today at the Second Time Around Senior Club, Representative Maxine Waters (CD 43) was presented with AARP’s “Champion of 50+” award, in recognition of her strong support for a new U.S. Department of Labor rule, which requires that retirement plan advice be given in the best interest of consumers – a rule which could save American families billions of dollars per year. Rep. Waters also voted AGAINST legislation that would have stopped the rule from taking effect.

AARP is one of the largest non-profit, non-partisan organizations in the world. With more than 38 million members (3.3 million in California), AARP is committed to improving the quality of life for ALL as they age. What would make Los Angeles an even better place to live? In 2016, AARP staff posed this question online and in person via listening posts — large writing surfaces stocked with markers and pens — in South Los Angeles. In both instances, we asked community members to weigh in on this simple, yet essential question. Responses formed a true snapshot of the intersection between the existing beauty of our communities and the endless possibilities of how we can make them even better; they ranged from affordable housing, to safe parks, reliable transit and intergenerational connectivity.

On Monday, June 13, 2016, Abraham Lincoln High School graduate, Adriana Meza Gonzalez, was selected as the recipient of this year’s Andrus Opportunity Award along with $5,000 to help her pay for her education. The award is named after AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who served as principal of Lincoln High from 1916 to 1944.

AARP is proud to announce the winners of its inaugural Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Hero Awards that were created to acknowledge the hardworking staff and volunteers of non-profit organizations serving AAPIs age 50-plus. “We’re proud to recognize Julie, Shiao-Lin, Dongwoo ‘Joe’ for their outstanding contributions and dedication to our seniors,” said Daphne Kwok, AARP Vice President of Multicultural Leadership, Asian American and Pacific Islander Audience Strategy. “They tirelessly devote their time, talents, and passion to provide an invaluable service to our community.
