As of November 1, 2025, millions of Americans—including many older Georgians—may not receive their monthly food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This disruption affects individuals living on fixed incomes, many of whom rely on SNAP to afford groceries and maintain their health.

Start the new year on the right foot with AARP Oklahoma-sponsored First Day Hikes at 14 Oklahoma state parks on New Year’s Day. This nationwide tradition, launched by state park systems, encourages people to begin the year with healthy outdoor activities and to keep the momentum going all year long.

With more than 58,000 veterans calling Delaware home, AARP has a long history of supporting those who have served in the U.S. armed forces, and we take pride in helping them navigate life’s transitions. Caring for a veteran or service member is meaningful work, but it can also be challenging. Every caregiving journey is unique, and AARP is here to help. We offer free resources and community programs designed to support military families and caregivers. These include guidance on health care and housing, fraud protection, career training, job search assistance, and family caregiving.
AARP Minnesota will inform residents about the change and promote AARP Smart Driver courses and other AARP Driver Safety programs during Traffic Safety Day at the Mall of America in May.
In Ohio, state volunteers champion legislative changes on critical issues, including support for family caregivers, brain health, fraud prevention and financial security for older adults.
AARP Delaware has teamed up with Smart Growth America — a Washington-based nonprofit — on a project that both groups hope will lead to more transportation options and affordable housing in key areas of the state.
AARP Illinois is working with state lawmakers on steps to protect older adults against scams.
In 2024, consumers in Michigan reported fraud losses totaling $204 million — up from $60 million in 2020. To combat such fraud, AARP is organizing events and pushing for policies to help older adults learn about and prevent scams.
North Carolina is facing a shortage of nursing home and home-care workers. During this year’s legislative session, AARP North Carolina is working to educate state lawmakers about the issue.
AARP presented volunteer Louis Frank Tompkins with the Andrus award in December.
